Elongated spindle drop earrings in 18k gold with a crossed-lattice design and diamond accents, their geometric precision inspired by the Shawnee tradition of sacred pattern.
Made to order.
Shawnee Earrings take their name from the Shawnee — the Shaawanwaki, one of the great Algonquian-speaking nations of the eastern woodlands, whose name means the people of the south wind. The Shawnee were among the most widely traveled and most influential nations in the history of eastern North America, moving across territories from the Ohio Valley to the Cumberland River basin to the Great Lakes as they maintained their sovereignty and their cultural continuity through centuries of pressure.
As a result, the Shawnee carried their traditions across enormous distances and into contact with many other nations, becoming one of the most widely connected peoples in the Indigenous world of eastern North America.
Furthermore, the geometric art of the Shawnee — in bead work, textile, and material culture — is characterized by its precise crossed-lattice patterns, its diamond-shaped motifs, its architectural use of positive and negative space.
The diamond form returns repeatedly in Shawnee visual culture: as a unit of bead work, as the crossing point of lattice lines, as the geometric element that appears when two diagonals intersect at a right angle. The Shawnee Earrings carry that geometry: the crossed lattice and the diamond accent as the visual language of a tradition that found meaning in the precise relationship between lines.
The Design of the Shawnee Earrings
The Shawnee Earrings translate the Shawnee lattice geometry into 18k gold. Each piece is an elongated spindle drop — a form that tapers at both ends and carries its full width at the center, its profile clean and architectural.
Across the surface of the spindle, a crossed lattice is applied: diagonal lines that intersect at regular intervals to create a pattern of diamond-shaped openings, each intersection accented with a diamond that reads as the concentrated point of the geometric crossing.
As a result, the Shawnee Earrings read as both jewellery and diagram: the geometry of a tradition made wearable in gold.
The Crossed Lattice
The crossed-lattice with its diamond accents is the soul of this design. Specifically, the diagonal lines of the lattice create a surface of visual energy — the eye follows the diagonals across the spindle form, finding the diamond accents at each crossing like a bead at the intersection of warp and weft.
Worn as drops, the Shawnee Earrings descend from the ear with the composed architectural authority of a form that knows its own geometry. Furthermore, the diamond accents catch the light at the precise points of the lattice’s intersections, so the earring seems to pulse with its own internal rhythm.
In this way, the Shawnee Earrings carry the essential quality of Shawnee geometric art: the beauty that belongs to a pattern that has been completely thought through.
Shawnee Earrings in 18k Gold
In rose gold the lattice and its diamond accents glow with warmth, the geometric crossing reading rich and vivid. In white gold the Shawnee Earrings turn cool and precise, the lattice reading with the architectural clarity of a worked surface in pale light.
In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity, the diamond accents at each crossing catching the light with their particular clarity. Whichever metal you choose, the lattice holds its pattern.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Shawnee earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The crossed-lattice spindle demands digital modeling: the diagonal lines must be placed at exactly the right angles so the pattern reads as the actual lattice geometry, the diamond settings must hold the stones at each crossing point, and the spindle form must taper consistently from center to tips.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Shawnee Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
