He is one of the Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies that govern human fate and fortune, and he rides a chariot drawn by ten white horses across the darkness, his light waxing and waning in the great cycle that has marked the passage of time since the world began. In the Vedic tradition, Chandra governs the mind, the way the moon governs the tides, pulling at what is fluid and changeable in human consciousness, drawing emotions up and letting them recede in rhythms that mirror his own.
He is associated with water, with dreams, with the silver quality of reflected light, light that is not its own but borrowed from the sun and returned to the world transformed, softened, made bearable for the darkness.
