Chandra Earrings

Two polished 18k gold strands cross and uncross in a continuous double helix, anchored at three points by matte spheres, moonlight on moving water, the waxing and waning of two forces in perfect alternation. Named for Chandra, the Hindu lunar deity who governs the tides of the mind, these earrings carry the rhythm of the moon against the neck.
The Chandra earrings are named for the moon, and they move like it.
Chandra is the Sanskrit name for the moon and for the lunar deity who carries it across the night sky in Hindu tradition. He is one of the Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies that govern human fate and fortune, and he rides a chariot drawn by ten white horses across the darkness, his light waxing and waning in the great cycle that has marked the passage of time since the world began. In the Vedic tradition, Chandra governs the mind, the way the moon governs the tides, pulling at what is fluid and changeable in human consciousness, drawing emotions up and letting them recede in rhythms that mirror his own.
He is associated with water, with dreams, with the silver quality of reflected light, light that is not its own but borrowed from the sun and returned to the world transformed, softened, made bearable for the darkness.
The Chandra earrings translate that lunar rhythm into a cascade of polished 18k gold. Two strands descend from a matte sphere at the top, crossing and uncrossing in a continuous double helix, the pattern of moonlight on moving water, of the two forces that govern the lunar cycle waxing and waning around each other in perfect, inevitable alternation. At regular intervals along the descent, matte spheres anchor the crossing points, marking the rhythm the way the full moon marks the month, three moments of stillness in a composition of continuous motion.
The double helix is one of nature’s most fundamental structures: the form taken by DNA, by climbing vines, by the spiral of shells, by the path of planets around the sun. In the Chandra earrings it becomes a cascade of light, polished strands catching illumination from every angle as the earrings move, the matte spheres holding their own quieter light against the brilliance of the gold around them.
In rose gold, the Chandra earrings glow with the warmth of a harvest moon, full, generous, close. In white gold, they carry the cool silver quality of moonlight in winter, sharp and clear. In yellow gold, they are luminous and ancient, the moon at its most sovereign, riding high across a cloudless sky.
