Chandra earrings take their name from Chandra — the Hindu god of the moon, one of the nine Navagraha of Vedic astronomy, whose name in Sanskrit means ‘shining’ and ‘radiance.’ Each night Chandra crosses the sky in a chariot drawn by white horses, his face the only part of him fully visible, carrying lotuses in each hand — the beauty of the moon given a human presence and a divine purpose.

In Vedic tradition he is also Soma, the lord of plants and the keeper of the divine nectar that waxes and wanes in his body as the gods draw from it and it refills. His cycle is not only a calendar — it is the rhythm of cosmic order, the most visible proof that the universe breathes.

The Design of the Chandra Earrings

The Chandra earrings translate the lunar cycle into gold through the form of the double helix. Each piece is a pair of spiraling strands of 18k gold that wind around one another as they descend from the ear — one coiling outward as the other draws in, the way the moon waxes as its dark side wanes, so the whole form reads as a single continuous motion.

The double helix is one of the fundamental patterns of nature, found in the structure of plants, shells, and living cells; to place it in gold and name it for the moon is to say that Chandra’s rhythm and the rhythms of living things are the same. Each Chandra earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing in São Paulo, Brazil.

The double helix demands digital modeling above all: the two strands must wind around one another with perfect mathematical consistency, the pitch of the spiral must be identical on both earrings, and the weight must be balanced so the piece hangs true. Hand-finishing then polishes each strand to a high shine that makes the gold seem to carry moonlight along its length.
