Selkye Ring

Selkye Ring takes its name from Selene and draws its form from the surface of the moon itself. The maria — from the Latin word for seas — are the vast dark plains that cover about a third of the moon’s near side.

Early astronomers who looked at the moon through the first telescopes gave these dark regions the name of seas because they thought they might be bodies of water: Mare Tranquillitatis, the Sea of Tranquility; Mare Serenitatis, the Sea of Serenity; Mare Imbrium, the Sea of Rains.

As a result, the moon was given an oceanic geography long before we understood what it actually was: a world of ancient lava plains that solidified billions of years ago, the dark basaltic rock of ancient eruptions cooled into the flat, smooth maria we see today.

Furthermore, the highlands that surround the maria are the oldest terrain on the moon — heavily cratered, lighter in color, the record of the early solar system when the moon was young and the impacts were constant.

The Selkye Ring maps that terrain: the organic cloud-like forms of the band describing the maria and highlands in their actual relationship, the smooth organic shapes of the dark plains contrasting with the rougher complexity of the highland forms.

The Design of the Selkye Ring

The Selkye Ring translates the lunar surface into 18k gold. The band carries organic, cloud-like forms that flow across its surface — smooth, rounded shapes that describe the maria as they actually appear from above: not geometric but organic, not arbitrary but the result of specific geological events.

The forms rise and fall across the band’s surface, creating a topography that rewards slow examination. As a result, the Selkye Ring reads as both jewellery and map: the moon’s surface worn on the finger.

The Maria and the Highlands

The organic cloud-like surface forms are the soul of this design. Specifically, the flowing shapes create a surface of depth and variation — the maria reading as smooth and expansive, the highland areas reading as more complex and detailed.

In the two-tone version, the two metals differentiate between these terrain types, so the lighter and darker areas of the lunar surface are both present in the ring.

Furthermore, the organic quality of the forms gives the band the quality of something shaped by natural forces rather than human geometry. In this way, the Selkye Ring carries the quality of the moon’s surface: the record of billions of years, readable only by those who know how to look.

Selkye Ring in 18k Gold

In rose gold the organic forms glow with warmth, the maria and highlands reading in a unified warm tone. In white gold the Selkye Ring turns cool and lunar, the surface reading with the pale clarity of moonlight on the actual lunar surface.

In yellow gold it radiates with full golden intensity, the organic forms reading bold and vivid. In two-tone versions, contrasting metals describe the actual color differentiation of the lunar terrain. Whichever metal you choose, the surface holds its map.

Craftsmanship and 3D Precision

Each Selkye Ring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The organic lunar surface demands digital modeling: the cloud-like forms must be placed with naturalistic consistency so the surface reads as a specific terrain rather than a generic texture, and the ring must be available in precise sizes while maintaining the surface character at every scale.

Hand-finishing polishes the raised forms to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
