Utty Ring takes its name from Uttu — the Sumerian goddess of weaving and vegetation, one of the most ancient and specific deities in the Sumerian pantheon. Uttu’s domain is the act of weaving itself: the interlacing of threads at right angles to create fabric, the fundamental act by which human beings first took raw material and organized it into something both useful and beautiful.
In the great Sumerian myth of Enki and Ninhursag, Uttu is the weaving goddess who receives the plants that Enki has created and weaves them into the fabric of the living world — the goddess whose work is the making of the visible world from its raw components.
As a result, weaving in Sumerian thought was not a mundane domestic activity but a cosmological one: the act by which chaos became form, the act by which thread became fabric became garment became body became identity.
Furthermore, Inanna — the great Queen of Heaven and Earth, the most widely worshiped deity in the Sumerian world — is also connected to the tradition of sacred weaving through the me, the divine laws that included the arts of craft and cloth.
Together, Uttu and Inanna place weaving at the centre of the Sumerian understanding of what it means to make something: the crosshatch of warp and weft as the most fundamental pattern of creation. The Utty Ring carries that crosshatch: the right-angle grid of the loom made permanent in gold.
The Design of the Utty Ring
The Utty Ring translates the weaving goddess’s loom into 18k gold. The band carries a crosshatch grid across its entire surface: the geometric pattern of warp and weft threads crossing at right angles, held in gold at the intersections, creating a surface that reads as both architectural and textile.
In two-tone versions, the two metals differentiate between the warp and the weft, so the crossing of the threads is made visible in contrasting materials. As a result, the Utty Ring reads as a ring whose surface is itself the act of weaving: the loom made wearable.
The Warp and the Weft
The crosshatch grid is the soul of this design. Specifically, the crossing of the two sets of lines — one running in each direction, meeting at perfect right angles — creates a surface of complete visual structure: everything in its place, nothing arbitrary, the logic of the grid applied to the round form of the band.
Worn on the finger, the Utty Ring carries its crosshatch in every direction. Furthermore, in two-tone versions the contrast between the metals makes the crossing itself the most visible element — the point where warp meets weft, the act of weaving visible at every intersection.
In this way, the Utty Ring carries the quality of Uttu’s work: the pattern that makes the fabric, the structure that makes the surface, the grid that makes the world.
Utty Ring in 18k Gold
In rose gold the crosshatch band glows with warmth, the grid reading rich and alive. In white gold the Utty Ring turns cool and precise, the crossing lines reading with the clarity of architectural line in pale light.
In yellow gold it radiates with full golden intensity — the loom’s grid in the most vivid material, the weaving made golden. In two-tone versions, contrasting metals describe the warp and the weft as distinct elements of the same crossing. Whichever metal you choose, the grid holds its pattern.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Utty Ring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The crosshatch grid demands digital modeling: the two sets of lines must cross at exactly right angles so the pattern reads as a true warp-and-weft, the intersections must be consistent in depth, and the ring must be available in precise sizes while maintaining the grid’s proportion. Hand-finishing polishes every surface.
This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
