Kagutsuchi Earrings

Zigzag lightning drop earrings in 18k gold, each set with a ruby, sapphire, or diamond at their angular heart. The Kagutsuchi earrings are named for the Japanese fire god whose birth consumed his mother and whose death gave rise to the thunder gods — destruction as the source of everything new.
Made to order in rose, white, or yellow gold.
Kagutsuchi earrings take their name from Kagutsuchi — the god of fire in Japanese mythology, born to the creator deities Izanagi and Izanami. His birth was catastrophic. As he entered the world, his fire burned his mother Izanami so severely that she died of her wounds.
As a result, she descended to Yomi, the realm of the dead, and the world lost its great creative mother. However, the story does not end in simple destruction. Izanagi, consumed by grief and rage, drew his sword and struck down his own son.
As a result of Kagutsuchi’s death, his body and his blood gave rise to dozens of new deities: the thunder gods, the rain gods, the mountain gods. Furthermore, even the sword that killed him became sacred. Kagutsuchi is therefore a god who creates through destruction, whose death is as generative as his life.
The Kagutsuchi earrings are named for that principle: fire understood not only as burning, but as the force that clears the way for everything new.
The Design of the Kagutsuchi Earrings
The Kagutsuchi earrings translate the energy of fire into 18k gold. Each piece is a zigzag drop — a succession of sharp, angular cuts that descend from the ear in the form of a lightning bolt or a dancing flame.
The zigzag is the visual language of fire and electricity: the line that does not go straight, that changes direction with sudden energy at every turn. As a result, the Kagutsuchi earrings read as both dangerous and alive. Therefore, they carry Kagutsuchi’s essential quality: the beauty that belongs specifically to things that burn.
Fire and Lightning
The angular zigzag form is the soul of this design. Specifically, the sharp changes of direction create a visual tension that makes the earring seem charged with energy, even when it is still. A gemstone is set within the form — a ruby, sapphire, or diamond that reads as the concentrated point of fire within the jagged gold.
Worn as drops, the Kagutsuchi earrings move and flash as the wearer moves. Furthermore, the angles catch the light at different points as the earring turns, so the piece seems to flicker. In this way, they carry the quality that fire has always had: the sense that something is happening, even when nothing has started yet.
Kagutsuchi Earrings in 18k Gold and Colored Gemstones
In rose gold the zigzag glows with warmth, set with a ruby at its heart that burns like the fire god himself — concentrated and alive. In white gold the Kagutsuchi earrings turn cool and electric, the angles sharp and precise around a sapphire that reads like lightning crossing a dark sky.
In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity, set with a brilliant diamond — the clearest possible fire, the most concentrated point of light. Each pairing gives the same angular form a different quality of heat.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Kagutsuchi earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The zigzag form demands digital modeling: every angle must be consistent in its cut so the form reads as deliberate rather than random, the gemstone setting must hold the stone securely within the angular structure, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly.
Additionally, the sharp edges must be smooth enough for comfortable wear while retaining the crisp visual profile. Hand-finishing then polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Kagutsuchi earrings are made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
