Tekhen Earrings

Tekhen earrings take the form of a long tapering obelisk in 18-karat gold, with two bezel-set gemstones at the base, inspired by the sacred tekhenu of ancient Egypt and the solar theology of the Benben stone. Made to order in São Paulo in rose gold with ruby, white gold with sapphire, or yellow gold with diamond.
Tekhen Earrings take their name from the tekhen — the ancient Egyptian word for the obelisk, one of the most enduring forms in the history of sacred architecture. A tekhen is a single upright stone, four-sided and tapering, terminating in a small pyramid called a pyramidion at its apex.
In ancient Egypt, the pyramidion was typically covered in electrum — a natural alloy of gold and silver — so that it caught the first light of the rising sun before any other surface on earth and held it, burning, as the day began.
As a result, the tekhen was a solar instrument as much as a monument: a device for capturing the sun’s first light, a needle of stone that held the sun’s fire at its tip. Obelisks were typically erected in pairs at the entrances to great temples — at Karnak, at Luxor, at Heliopolis — where they flanked the axis of the sacred precinct and channeled the solar power of the rising sun into the temple interior.
Furthermore, the tekhen was the form that proved most enduring of all Egyptian monuments: taken to Rome by Augustus, to Paris in the nineteenth century, to London, to New York, to Constantinople (Istanbul).
Of all the forms that Egypt gave to the world, the obelisk was the one that every subsequent civilization felt compelled to acquire and to set in the centre of its own sacred or civic space. The Tekhen Earrings carry that form: the tapering solar needle as a drop worn at the ear, with gemstones bezel-set along its length like the hieroglyphs carved on the original tekhen.
The Design of the Tekhen Earrings
The Tekhen Earrings translate the sacred obelisk into 18k gold. Each piece is a tapering drop — a four-sided form that narrows from a broader base to a fine point at its tip, its profile the unmistakable silhouette of the Egyptian tekhen.
Along the taper, two gemstones are bezel-set at carefully considered positions: a diamond, ruby, or sapphire held in smooth gold collars, reading as the concentrated solar points within the monumental form.
As a result, the Tekhen Earrings carry both the monumental authority of the obelisk and the solar quality of its electrum-capped apex.
The Solar Needle
The tapering obelisk form with its bezel-set gemstones is the soul of this design. Specifically, the taper creates a visual direction that is absolute — the eye is drawn from the broad base to the pointed tip with the same inevitability that the original tekhen drew the eye from the ground to the sky.
Worn as drops, the Tekhen Earrings descend from the ear in a line that reads as both architectural and alive.
Furthermore, each bezel-set stone along the taper catches the light at its own position, reading as a distinct point of solar presence within the descending form. In this way, the Tekhen Earrings carry the essential quality of the tekhen: the form that turns the light of the sun into something held.
Tekhen Earrings in 18k Gold and Colored Gemstones
In rose gold the tapering obelisk glows with warmth, the two bezel-set rubies reading along its length like concentrated solar fire. In white gold the Tekhen Earrings turn cool and monumental, sapphires reading within their bezels with the deep blue of the sky above Karnak.
In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity — the most direct echo of the electrum-capped original tekhen, the first object to hold the morning sun.
Whichever stone you choose, the taper holds its line.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Tekhen earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The tapering obelisk demands digital modeling: the four-sided taper must be perfectly consistent from base to tip, each bezel setting must hold its stone at exactly the right position along the taper, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly in form and weight.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Tekhen Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
