Shrivatsy Pendant

Shrivatsy Pendant takes its name from the Shrivatsa — the sacred mark on the chest of Vishnu, the Preserver, one of the supreme deities of the Hindu tradition. Sri Vatsa means the beloved of Sri, Sri being another name for Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty and abundance.

As a result, the Shrivatsa is the mark that identifies Vishnu as the one who is eternally loved by Lakshmi, the divine union of preservation and abundance written directly on the body of the god. The Shrivatsa is depicted as a distinctive whorl or curl on Vishnu’s chest — one of the sixteen sacred ornaments (shodashopachara) that adorn his divine form. Furthermore, the Shrivatsa is one of the Ashtamangala — the eight auspicious symbols of Hindu and Jain tradition — alongside the lotus, the conch shell, the swastika, the fish, the vase, the parasol, and the endless knot.

Together, these eight symbols appear at the most sacred moments of Hindu life: at weddings, at births, at the consecration of temples, at the great festivals. To carry the Shrivatsa is to carry the mark of the divine beloved, the sign that presence has been consecrated by love.
