For the earliest Christians in the Roman world, it held a deeper meaning: an acronym for Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter — Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. Before the cross, there was the fish.

In the second and third centuries, when open Christian worship was dangerous, believers used the ichthys as a secret sign. One person would draw a single arc in the dirt; a second person, recognising it, would complete the fish with another arc. In this way, they could identify each other without words.

As a result, the ichthys carries a meaning that precedes the public life of the Church: it is a symbol formed in hiddenness, in trust, in the decision to believe.
