Rhea Ring
$0.01
A sinuous wave band in 18k gold with oval gemstone apertures, its flowing form drawn from Rhea, the Titaness Great Mother who saved Zeus and preserved the line of the Olympians.
Made to order.
Rhea Ring takes its name from Rhea — the great Titaness, the Mother of the Gods, the one who kept the Olympians alive when everything was against them. Rhea was the wife of Kronos, the Titan king who had received a prophecy that his own child would one day overthrow him.
As a result, Kronos swallowed each of his children as they were born; Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon — all consumed, all held in darkness within him.
When Zeus was born, the last of her children, Rhea could not accept it again. She wrapped a stone in swaddling clothes and gave it to Kronos in place of the child. Furthermore, she hid the infant Zeus on the island of Crete, where the ancient cult of the Great Mother goddess — the Minoan tradition, the oldest in the Aegean world — protected him until he was strong enough to return and free his siblings.
The stone that Kronos swallowed was later vomited out with all the children at once, and it was placed at Delphi as the omphalos — the navel of the world. Rhea is therefore the one who decided: she chose to protect the future over accepting the present, to sacrifice her comfort for her child, to deceive the most powerful being in the world because she knew what was worth protecting.
The Rhea Ring carries the form of her great, patient, and subversive love: the wave as the sinuous, continuous motion of a force that sustains without stopping.
The Design of the Rhea Ring
The Rhea Ring translates the Great Mother’s sustaining quality into 18k gold. The band is sinuous — a wave form that flows continuously around the finger, rising and falling with the rhythm of something that moves without effort.
Within the wave, oval apertures are cut, and in each aperture a gemstone is set: a diamond, ruby, or sapphire that reads as the concentrated point of life held within the wave’s passage.
As a result, the Rhea Ring reads as a ring about containment and release: the wave that holds and the opening that lets through.
The Wave and the Great Mother
The sinuous wave band with its oval gemstone apertures is the soul of this design. Specifically, the wave form creates a visual rhythm that moves around the finger without beginning or end, the way the Great Mother’s sustaining presence has no beginning or end.
The oval apertures create a contrast between the solid gold of the wave and the open spaces within it, like the moments when Rhea’s patient strategy revealed its form. Furthermore, each gemstone within its oval catches the light with a particular quality that the surrounding gold does not — concentrated, vivid, specific.
In this way, the Rhea Ring carries Rhea’s essential quality: the patient, continuous force that sustains everything, and the specific act of care that changes the future.
Rhea Ring in 18k Gold and Colored Gemstones
In rose gold the wave band glows with warmth, the oval apertures holding rubies that burn within the sinuous form like life itself held within the Great Mother’s tide. In white gold the Rhea Ring turns cool and luminous, sapphires reading within the oval apertures with the blue depth of the sea around Crete, where Rhea hid her son.
In yellow gold it radiates with full golden intensity, brilliant diamonds set in the oval apertures — the clearest possible life held within the most vivid possible wave.
Whichever stone you choose, the wave holds its rhythm.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Rhea Ring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The sinuous wave with oval apertures demands digital modeling: the wave form must flow consistently around the full circumference of the band, each oval aperture must be placed at the correct position within the wave, and each gemstone setting must hold its stone securely within the aperture.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Rhea Ring is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
