Description

Pythonee Earrings are a portal to the most sacred site in the ancient Greek world, the Oracle of Delphi, where the earth spoke through a woman, and where the future was made available to those who could bear to hear it. Each earring is built around an open oval frame, the omphalos, the navel stone, that the ancient Greeks believed marked the exact center of the world. Within this frame, three sinuous branches rise from the base and curl upward, each one tipped with a bezel-set gemstone that blazes at the apex of its arc like the flame of a prophetic vision. This is the Pythia in gold: the tripod, the laurel, and the light that burns at the threshold between the human and the divine.

Python was the great chthonic serpent, born from the mud left by the flood of Deucalion, coiled around the omphalos stone at the center of the world, the guardian of the prophetic vapors that rose from the fissure in the earth at Delphi. It was Apollo who slew Python and claimed the oracle for the Olympian order, but the name of the vanquished serpent endured in the title of the priestess who took his place: the Pythia, the mouthpiece of Apollo, the woman who sat upon the golden tripod above the chasm and breathed the pneuma, the sacred breath of the earth, until the god spoke through her. For nearly a thousand years, from the eighth century BCE to the fourth century CE, every major decision of the Greek world, war, colonization, law, marriage, the founding of cities, was brought to Delphi and laid before the Pythia.

The three branches inside the oval frame of the Pythonee Earrings carry this entire history. Three is the sacred number of Delphi: the three-legged tripod upon which the Pythia sat; the three words of the most famous inscription above the temple entrance, Know Thyself; the three parts of the Delphic oracle, the question, the trance, the answer. In the legend of the founding of the oracle, the first prophets were three women who discovered the vapors spontaneously and began to prophecy. The three gemstone-tipped branches are these three women, these three moments, these three principles, each one a point of light at the end of a sinuous golden arm that rises from the earth.

The oval frame that contains the branches is the omphalos, the egg-shaped stone that Cronus swallowed in place of Zeus, later regurgitated, and installed at Delphi as the marker of the world’s center. The omphalos is one of the most loaded objects in ancient Greek religion: simultaneously a navel, an egg, a tomb marker, and a cosmic axis. It was wrapped in a sacred net and flanked by golden eagles. At Delphi, two eagles were said to have been released by Zeus from opposite ends of the earth; they met at Delphi, confirming it as the center. The oval of the Pythonee Earrings is this meeting point, this center, the still space within which prophecy becomes possible.

The stud post emerges from the upper arc of the oval as naturally as the handle of a ritual vessel, the earring hangs from the ear as the oracle hangs from the world, suspended between earth and heaven, between the human and the divine. The oval frame is entirely polished, reflecting the environment of the wearer in its smooth curve, while the three internal branches carry a softer, more organic surface quality, the earth inside the stone, the living world within the sacred boundary.

Available in 18k rose gold with rubies, 18k white gold with sapphires, and 18k yellow gold with diamonds. In rose gold, the three rubies at the branch tips are the fire of the sacred hearth that burned continuously at Delphi, tended by the priests of Apollo. In white gold, the sapphires are the blue pneuma, the prophetic breath rising from the earth. In yellow gold, the diamonds are the full radiance of Apollo himself, the god of light who claimed the oracle and made it sing. Each pair is designed in 3D parametric software and hand-finished by artisans in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
