Omphalus Earrings
$0.01
Granulated blade earrings in 18k gold, their bubble-textured surface inspired by the sacred omphalos stone at Delphi and the sea foam from which Aphrodite was born. The Omphalus Earrings bring together two of the oldest forms in Greek sacred art.
Made to order.
Omphalus Earrings take their name from the omphalos — the sacred navel stone at Delphi, which the ancient Greeks understood as the centre of the world. According to the myth, Zeus sent two eagles from the opposite ends of the earth at the same moment, instructing them to fly toward each other at the same speed.
They met at Delphi, and the omphalos stone was placed there to mark the exact spot where the world’s center had been confirmed. As a result, the oracle at Delphi — the most important in the ancient world — spoke from the very navel of the earth, her words carrying the authority of that central position.
Furthermore, the Omphalus Earrings draw from a second tradition that connects at the same point: the birth of Aphrodite from the sea foam. Hesiod tells us that when Kronos cast the severed remains of Ouranos into the sea, a white foam gathered around them, and from that foam Aphrodite arose, fully formed, standing on a shell.
The sea foam is the original granulation: thousands of tiny spheres of water in contact with light, each one separate and perfect. The Etruscan goldsmiths understood this: they developed the technique of granulation — the fusing of tiny gold spheres to a metal surface — to its highest point in the ancient world.
The Omphalus Earrings carry both: the omphalos as the form and the sea foam as the texture.
The Design of the Omphalus Earrings
The Omphalus Earrings translate the sacred bubble-textured surface of the omphalos and the sea foam into 18k gold. Each piece is a blade drop whose surface is covered in granulation — fine spheres of gold fused to the surface in a pattern that reads as both archaeological and natural: the ancient goldsmithing technique at the service of the oldest birth story in the Greek world.
As a result, the Omphalus Earrings carry two traditions simultaneously: the sacred geometry of the world’s center and the foam from which beauty was born. Therefore, they are earrings for those who understand that the most ancient forms are the most alive.
Sea Foam and Sacred Stone
The granulated bubble surface is the soul of this design. Specifically, the tiny spheres of gold create a surface that shifts between smooth and dimensional as the light changes — now reading as flat texture, now as a field of individual points of warmth.
Worn as drops, the Omphalus Earrings descend from the ear with the composed authority of sacred objects. Furthermore, the granulation rewards close attention: what reads from a distance as texture reveals itself on close inspection as thousands of individual decisions made with absolute precision.
In this way, the Omphalus Earrings carry the quality of both their sources: the navel stone’s sense of center, and the sea foam’s quality of being made of countless small things that together make one beautiful whole.
Omphalus Earrings in 18k Gold
In rose gold the granulated blade glows with warmth, the tiny spheres reading rich and alive like golden sea foam caught in amber light. In white gold the Omphalus Earrings turn cool and luminous, the granulation catching light with the clarity of sea foam under a clear sky.
In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity — the most direct echo of the Etruscan goldsmiths who worked their granulation in yellow gold and understood it as the most sacred pairing of technique and material. Whichever metal you choose, the surface holds its sacred texture.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Omphalus earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The granulated blade demands digital modeling: every sphere must be placed at a consistent size and spacing so the granulation reads as even across the entire surface, the blade form beneath must taper correctly despite the texture on its surface, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly.
Hand-finishing polishes the raised sphere surfaces to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Omphalus Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
