Oriethusa Earrings

Teardrop drop earrings in 18k gold, their form drawn from the water drop that Arethusa became. Named for the Greek nymph who fled her pursuer beneath the sea and emerged as the freshwater spring that still flows on the island of Ortygia.
Made to order.
Oriethusa Earrings take their name from Arethusa — the Greek water nymph whose story is one of the most quietly extraordinary in all of classical mythology. Arethusa was a huntress nymph, a companion of Artemis, chaste and fleet and entirely of the wild world.
One day she came to bathe in the river Alpheus in the Peloponnese. As she rested in the water, she felt something moving beneath her — and understood that the river god Alpheus was himself in the water, pursuing her.
As a result, she fled, running across Greece all the way to the coast of Sicily in her terror. There, at the edge of the sea, she prayed to Artemis. Furthermore, the goddess answered: she transformed Arethusa into a spring of freshwater that sank into the earth, passed beneath the sea floor, and emerged on the other side of the Mediterranean at the island of Ortygia, just off the coast of Syracuse.
There, the spring of Arethusa still flows today — a pool of freshwater beside the sea on the island of Ortygia, papyrus growing at its edges, the fish that live in it said to be sacred. She ran from Greece to Sicily beneath the bottom of the sea, and she arrived as a spring.
The Oriethusa Earrings carry the form of that transformation: the teardrop, the shape that water takes when it falls.
The Design of the Oriethusa Earrings
The Oriethusa Earrings translate the form of the water drop into 18k gold. Each piece is a teardrop — a smooth, tapering form that descends from the ear with the composed inevitability of water finding its level.
The teardrop is the shape that water makes when gravity and surface tension hold it together at the moment before it falls: a form that carries both stillness and motion, both the held breath and the release. As a result, the Oriethusa Earrings carry the quality of Arethusa’s transformation: the moment when the nymph and the spring became the same thing.
The Spring Beneath the Sea
The teardrop form is the soul of this design. Specifically, the smooth taper from widest to finest creates a form of perfect composure — nothing interrupted, nothing added, the descent entirely itself. Worn as drops, the Oriethusa Earrings descend from the ear with the slow, patient quality of a spring working its way through rock.
Furthermore, the polished gold surface of the teardrop catches and holds the light the way still water catches and holds the sky: completely, without distortion. In this way, the Oriethusa Earrings carry Arethusa’s essential quality: the stillness of something that has been through tremendous motion and arrived at its truest form.
Oriethusa Earrings in 18k Gold
In rose gold the teardrop glows with warmth, the smooth surface reading intimate and close, like the spring of Arethusa seen in warm afternoon light. In white gold the Oriethusa Earrings turn cool and luminous, the teardrop catching light with the clarity of freshwater against pale stone.
In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity — the most vivid expression of the teardrop form, the water drop at its most present and most alive. Whichever metal you choose, the teardrop holds its form.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Oriethusa earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The teardrop demands perfection in its simplicity: the taper must be smooth and consistent from widest to finest, the widest point must sit at precisely the right position so the form reads as a true drop rather than an arbitrary shape, and the two earrings must mirror each other exactly.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a mirror shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Oriethusa Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
