Wuchowsen Earrings take their name from Wuchowsen — the great Wind Bird of Wabanaki tradition, the sacred creature of the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, and Abenaki peoples of the northeastern woodlands and the Atlantic coast.

Wuchowsen is the immortal bird whose wings create the wind: when Wuchowsen opens his wings fully, the great storms move across the land; when he folds them, the air becomes still.

He is not the wind in a merely metaphorical sense but the wind’s actual presence in the form of a great bird, the living body of the force that moves through the world. As a result, Wuchowsen carries the quality of something that is both immensely powerful and completely invisible in its operation — you cannot see the Wind Bird, only the wind his wings create.

Furthermore, the helical twist of the Wuchowsen Earrings carries the wind’s visual quality: the spiral path that wind takes as it moves, visible in the twist of a leaf falling, in the curl of smoke, in the spiral of a storm seen from above.
