Description

Norigae Earrings take their name from the norigae — the most characteristic and beloved ornament in Korean traditional dress. The norigae is a pendant worn from the jeogori jacket or the skirt tie of the hanbok, whose complex and refined lines have defined Korean aesthetic sensibility for centuries.

A norigae typically consists of a decorative complex knot, an ornamental body, and a tassel at the base. It was worn by women of all social classes during the Joseon dynasty — from palace court ladies whose norigae were set with jade and precious metals, to ordinary women whose norigae were made of silk.

As a result, the norigae was not merely an accessory but a form of personal expression. Furthermore, the maedeup — the traditional Korean art of decorative knotting — is the foundational technique of the norigae.

Maedeup knots are not simple ties but complex symmetrical forms that take years to master, each named for the shape it creates: the chrysanthemum knot, the plum blossom knot, the butterfly knot.

The Norigae Earrings carry that tradition: braided and latticed gold echoing the interlaced forms of maedeup, translated into metal and hung from the ear.

The Design of the Norigae Earrings

The Norigae Earrings translate the braided and latticed forms of the traditional norigae into 18k gold. Each piece descends from the ear in a sequence that echoes the norigae’s structure: a latticed upper section that evokes the decorative knot, flowing into a braided drop.

As a result, the Norigae Earrings read as both jewelry and cultural reference: a form immediately recognized by those who know the Korean tradition and discovered with delight by those who encounter it for the first time. Therefore, they carry their meaning, tradition and personal expression across cultures without requiring translation.

Maedeup in Gold

The braided lattice is the soul of this design. Specifically, the interweaving of the gold forms creates a surface of controlled complexity — mathematically precise in construction but visually warm and alive in effect.

Worn as drops, the Norigae Earrings move with the wearer, the braided forms catching and releasing the light as they swing. Furthermore, the lattice section creates a visual contrast of structure and flow against the braid below.

In this way, the Norigae Earrings carry the essential quality of maedeup: the beauty that belongs to something made by patient, skilled repetition.

Norigae Earrings in 18k Gold

In rose gold the braided lattice glows with warmth, the forms reading rich and alive like the finest silk maedeup given in gold. In white gold the Norigae Earrings turn cool and precise, the lattice catching light with the clarity of moonlit silk.

In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity — the most direct echo of the court norigae worn by palace ladies of the Joseon dynasty. Whichever metal you choose, the braid holds its pattern.

Craftsmanship and 3D Precision

Each Norigae earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The braided lattice demands digital modeling: every interweaving element must be placed with consistency so the pattern reads as deliberate, the transition between sections must be seamless, and the two earrings must mirror each other exactly.

Hand-finishing polishes every surface. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.

A Made-to-Order Piece

Like every Friszman MD creation, the Norigae Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
