Meropee Pendant

Among the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione, Merope shines with a particular melancholy. She was one of the Pleiades, the virgin companions of Artemis, caretakers of the infant Bacchus, beloved nymphs of extraordinary grace. When the great hunter Orion fell in love with them and pursued them relentlessly across the earth, Zeus intervened and placed them among the stars, where Orion would chase them through the heavens for eternity, never catching, never stopping.

A dark interstellar cloud bears Merope’s name to this day, a nebula ravaged by the light of her star, glowing with the turbulence of cosmic forces that have no interest in being still.

The Meropee pendant captures exactly that energy. A rectangular column of 18k gold rises vertically, contained and architectural in its basic form, but from every face of its surface, organic elements burst outward with barely controlled force. Elliptical windows carve through the body of the piece while raised spheres of varying sizes push outward from the edges and faces, as if the metal itself is expanding, as if something contained within is pressing to escape.

The contrast between the rigid geometry of the column and the organic, almost biological quality of the raised elements creates a tension that makes this pendant impossible to look away from. Worn on a chain, it catches light from every angle, the spheres casting small shadows across the textured surfaces below them.

In rose gold the warmth of the metal makes the organic elements feel almost alive. In white gold the cool precision of the finish gives the piece a cosmic, otherworldly quality. In yellow gold the full richness of the metal honors the stellar mythology at its heart.
