An oval pendant in 18k gold with a bezel-set gemstone at its centre. The Thera Pendant is named for the ancient volcanic island whose catastrophic eruption may have given rise to the legend of Atlantis.

Thera Pendant takes its name from Thera — the ancient island, now known as Santorini, that was the site of one of the most catastrophic geological events in human history. Around 1620 BCE, the volcanic island of Thera erupted in an explosion so immense that it collapsed the island’s centre into the sea (Atlantis?), created a caldera large enough to swallow a city, and sent shock waves of ash and tsunami across the entire eastern Mediterranean.
As a result, the Minoan civilization on the nearby island of Crete — the most sophisticated in the ancient Aegean — was severely weakened, its palace complexes buried under ash, its trade networks disrupted, its hold on the Aegean shattered.
Furthermore, the catastrophe at Thera may have given rise to one of the most enduring legends in the ancient world: the story of Atlantis. Plato’s account, written approximately twelve hundred years after the eruption, describes a powerful and sophisticated island civilization that disappeared beneath the sea in a single day and night of catastrophic destruction.
The scale of the Theran eruption, the disappearance of its centre into the ocean, and its proximity to the height of Minoan civilization make it one of the most compelling candidates for the lost world that Plato described.
The Thera Pendant carries the form of that memory: the oval of the island seen from above, and at its centre a gemstone that holds the concentrated light of the world that was lost.
The Design of the Thera Pendant
The Thera Pendant translates the form of the lost island into 18k gold. The pendant is oval — the shape of the ancient island as it appeared before the eruption, a self-contained world surrounded by the Aegean.
At the centre, a gemstone is bezel-set: a diamond, ruby, or sapphire held in a smooth gold collar, reading as the concentrated presence of what the island contained before the catastrophe.
As a result, the Thera Pendant carries both the geological drama of Thera’s history and the elegance of a form that has been completely resolved.
The Lost World
The oval with its bezel-set gemstone is the soul of this design. Specifically, the smooth bezel holds the stone without prongs, so the gem sits flush within the oval form — contained, protected, present.
Worn close to the body, the Thera Pendant carries the memory of the lost world at the centre of its form.
Furthermore, the bezel’s smooth gold collar gives the gemstone a quality of being held rather than displayed — the way Plato described Atlantis as something held in memory rather than visible in the world.
In this way, the Thera Pendant carries the quality of the lost island: the beauty that existed before the catastrophe and that persists in the form of the memory it left behind.
Thera Pendant in 18k Gold and Colored Gemstones
In rose gold the oval glows with warmth, the bezel-set ruby reading at the centre like the volcanic heart of Thera itself. In white gold the Thera Pendant turns cool and geological, a sapphire reading within the bezel with the deep blue of the Aegean that now covers what was once an island.
In yellow gold it radiates with full golden intensity, a brilliant diamond at the centre — the clearest possible light at the place where a world once stood. Whichever stone you choose, the oval holds its memory.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Thera Pendant was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing.
The oval with bezel-set gemstone demands digital modeling: the oval must be proportioned correctly so the form reads as composed and resolved, the bezel must hold the stone flush and secure at exactly the visual centre, and the pendant must hang true so the face presents forward.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
