Lotts Earrings. In the bed of any river that has been flowing long enough, the stones are smooth. Not polished, polished is a human intervention, deliberate and directed. The smoothness of the river stone is something different: the result of a process so slow and so continuous that no single moment of it is visible, the stone shaped by the combined action of the water and the other stones, each one wearing the others down in a process of mutual gradual reduction that ends, over geological time, in the rounded, satisfying form that a child picks up from the shallows and feels in her palm as if it had always been waiting for that hand.
The Lotts earring is built from that form. Each piece is a long, solid cylinder of gold whose surface is covered with an organic arrangement of raised, rounded shapes, forms that press outward from the body of the cylinder like river stones packed closely together, each one slightly different in size and contour, the spaces between them forming a matte field that holds the polished convex faces in a network of contrast. The pattern does not repeat. It is not geometric. It is distributed in the way that stones are distributed in a riverbed: with an underlying logic of packing and proximity, but no two configurations identical, the eye always finding something slightly different in each zone of the surface.
The sacred river stone appears across the world’s mythological traditions with a consistency that suggests something universal about the human response to these objects. In Japan, the practice of suiseki, the art of appreciating naturally shaped stones, is more than a millennium old, and the most prized suiseki are those whose form suggests a landscape, an animal, or a human figure through the action of water and time alone. The stone is not carved; it is found, recognized, and placed in a context that allows its inherent nature to be perceived. In the Shinto tradition, certain stones were understood as the dwelling places of kami, divine presences, and were enshrined and venerated accordingly.
In Celtic mythology, the sacred rivers of Ireland and Britain were understood as living entities with their own personalities, preferences, and demands. The River Boyne, from whose waters the goddess Boann drew wisdom and paid for it with her life, was not merely a geographical feature but a divine being whose currents carried meaning. The stones of these rivers were understood as the river’s memory, shaped by its passage, carrying in their smooth surfaces the accumulated record of everything the water had touched. To hold a river stone was to hold a compressed history of the landscape through which it had moved.
In ancient Greece, the most sacred object at Delphi,the navel of the world, the axis around which the oracle and the prophecies and the entire religious geography of the Greek world was organized — was a stone. The Omphalos: a dome-shaped piece of pale stone, its surface carved with a net-like pattern of woven bands, set in the innermost chamber of Apollo’s temple. The oracle spoke beside it. Pilgrims traveled thousands of miles to stand near it. It was, in a sense, the first jewel, a shaped stone whose value was entirely a matter of what people understood it to mean, and what they were willing to do to be near it.
