Ethainy earrings are an open teardrop in 18-karat gold with a single gemstone suspended at the base of the frame, inspired by the Irish goddess Étaín, who passed through water, air, and flesh across three lifetimes without ceasing to be herself. Made to order in São Paulo in rose gold with ruby, white gold with sapphire, or yellow gold with diamond.
Ethainy Earrings. In the oldest cycles of Irish mythology, before the Tuatha Dé Danann gave way to the age of mortals, there lived a woman of such extraordinary beauty that her story required three lifetimes to contain. Her name was Étaín, and the Ethainy earring takes its name, and its form, from her. She was first a goddess, born among the divine people of the otherworld; then, through the jealousy of a rival, she was transformed: first into a pool of water, then a worm, then a butterfly of impossible radiance, drifting for a thousand years through the storms of Ireland before being swallowed by a mortal woman and reborn, once more, into human form. She passed through water, air, and flesh. She never ceased to be herself.
The Ethainy earring was designed to hold that passage in visible form. Each piece is an open teardrop, a long, smooth arc of gold that widens from a fine point at the top into a rounded, generous curve at the base, its interior left empty except for a single gemstone suspended at the lowest point of the opening. The stone does not touch the edges of the frame. It floats. It is held by the narrowest possible cradle at the base, so that from certain angles it appears entirely unsupported, a drop of light caught inside a larger form, the gem and the gold in permanent, delicate conversation.
The teardrop is one of the most ancient forms in human art and mythology. In ancient Mesopotamia, the raindrop was sacred to Ishtar, the goddess of love and war, whose tears were said to fall as rain when she mourned her lover Tammuz in the underworld. In Hindu cosmology, the bindu, the single point from which all creation expands, is often depicted as a teardrop, the universe held in a single suspended instant before it begins to unfold. In Celtic tradition, the teardrop appears in the illuminated manuscripts as a symbol of transformation: the soul in transit, the moment between one state and the next, the instant of becoming.
The open frame of the Ethainy earring is not a reduction but a choice. By removing the interior of the teardrop, the design creates a relationship between the gold and the space around it that a solid form could never achieve. The ear moves; the light shifts; the empty interior of the earring frames different backgrounds as the wearer turns. The gemstone, suspended in that emptiness, becomes the pivot point of a small drama: the only fixed element in a constantly changing composition of light, space, and gold.
In rose gold with ruby, the earring is warm and arterial, the deep red stone a counterweight to the curved warmth of the metal, the whole piece suggesting something alive, something pulsing with interior light. In white gold with sapphire, the cool metal and deep blue stone create a nocturnal quality, the teardrop as a fragment of winter sky, the gemstone a star held within it. In yellow gold with diamond, the classic pairing of the purest metal and the purest stone produces a piece of absolute clarity: the teardrop as a vessel of light, the diamond scattering what the gold collects.
Ethainy earrings are available in rose, white, and yellow gold, each set with its corresponding gemstone. All pieces are made to order in São Paulo, Brazil, individually crafted and finished by hand. The post closure ensures the teardrop hangs exactly as designed, the opening facing forward, the floating gemstone visible to anyone who looks.
