Fheetysh Earrings. In ancient Greece, two serpents wound around the staff of Hermes, messenger of the gods, the caduceus, carried as he moved between the world of the living and the world of the dead. The serpents did not fight. They turned around the same axis in opposite directions, their bodies never touching, their spirals in perfect counterbalance. Modern science has given the helix one more meaning: the double helix of deoxyribonucleic acid, the molecule that carries the instructions for every living thing that has ever existed on Earth. The discovery in 1953 that the genetic code was structured as a spiral ladder, two strands wound around a shared axis, each the complement and mirror of the other — gave ancient visual intuition a biochemical confirmation. What the Greeks encoded in myth, what the Vedic sages described in meditation, what the Norse myth makers wrote into the structure of the cosmos: it was also literally there, in the nucleus of every cell, waiting to be seen.

The Fheetysh earring does not make this connection explicit. It simply holds the form, the helix wound around the cylinder, the spiral groove catching light as it ascends, and lets the wearer carry that shape through the world.
