Ethainy Earrings
$0.01
Open teardrop earrings in 18k gold, each holding a ruby, sapphire, or diamond at the tip of its frame. The Ethainy earrings are named for Étaín, the most beautiful woman in Irish mythology — transformed into a butterfly, blown for a thousand years, and reborn unchanged.
Made to order in São Paulo, Brazil.
Ethainy earrings take their name from Étaín — the most beautiful woman in Irish mythology and one of the great heroines of the Celtic world. Her story is told in the Tochmarc Étaíne, one of the oldest surviving tales in the Irish mythological tradition.
Étaín was so beautiful that a jealous rival, Fuamnach, transformed her into a butterfly. However, she did not disappear. She was blown about on the winds of Ireland for a thousand years, unable to land, unable to rest.
Yet she remained herself through every transformation. She was eventually swallowed and reborn as a human, as radiant as she had ever been. As a result, her story is not only about beauty. It is about the quality that survives every change: something essential that cannot be taken away, no matter what form it is forced to wear.
The Design of the Ethainy Earrings
The Ethainy earrings translate Étaín’s story into gold. Each piece is an open teardrop frame — the outline of a drop traced in fine gold, with the interior left open. As a result, the earring defines a shape through its edges rather than its mass.
It is the form of a butterfly’s wing, or a drop of water caught in motion, or the outline of something that has passed through the world and left its shape behind. The gemstone is set at the base of the frame, held at the point of the drop, so it catches the light at the lowest and most concentrated point of the design.
The Ethainy earrings are built on the idea that beauty is defined by its outline, not by what fills it.
Transformation and Radiance
The open frame is the soul of this design. Specifically, the empty interior makes the earring feel light and alive. The light passes through it and around it, so the piece reads differently depending on what is behind it.
Furthermore, the gemstone at the base gives the open form its anchor: a fixed point of brilliance within something that seems to float. Worn as drops, the Ethainy earrings move gently against the neck. The open frame catches the air as the wearer moves.
In this way, they carry Étaín’s quality: present in every moment, defined by grace rather than weight.
Ethainy Earrings in 18k Gold and Coloured Stones
In rose gold the open frame glows with warmth, set with a ruby that burns at the tip of the drop like a captured flame. In white gold the Ethainy earrings turn cool and precise around a sapphire, the stone reading deep and clear within the open outline. In yellow gold they radiate with full intensity, set with a brilliant diamond — the clearest echo of Étaín herself, the woman who remained radiant through a thousand years of transformation.
Each pairing gives the same open form a different quality of light and meaning.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Ethainy earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing in São Paulo, Brazil.
The open teardrop frame demands digital modeling. The outline must be perfectly consistent in thickness so the frame reads as a single clean gesture. Additionally, the gemstone setting must hold the stone securely at the base without interrupting the flow of the teardrop form.
The two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly. Hand-finishing then polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Ethainy earrings are made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
