Nephele Earrings
$0.01
Double helix drop earrings in 18k gold, their interlocking spirals inspired by Nephele — the cloud nymph of Greek mythology, mother of the children who rode the golden ram, and the form that is always in the process of becoming.
Made to order in rose, white, or yellow gold.
Nephele earrings take their name from Nephele — whose name simply means ‘cloud’ in Greek, and whose mythology is as layered and shifting as clouds themselves. Nephele appears in two great Greek stories.
In the first, Zeus fashioned a cloud in the shape of Hera — or in some versions the real Hera used a cloud as a decoy — and from the union of that cloud-form and the impious Ixion came the centaurs, the half-human, half-horse beings who populated the wilder regions of the Greek world.
As a result, the cloud is literally the mother of the centaurs: the form that contained a misplaced desire and gave birth to something wilder than either of its sources. Furthermore, in the second myth, Nephele was the mother of Phrixus and Helle, the children saved from sacrifice on the back of the golden ram whose fleece became the object of the Argonauts’ quest.
She is the figure at the beginning of the story of the Golden Fleece: the cloud mother whose gift of a winged golden animal set in motion one of the great adventures of Greek mythology. The Nephele earrings carry that quality of the cloud: the form that shifts, contains, and releases — that is both the medium of transformation and the origin of great beginnings.
The Design of the Nephele Earrings
The Nephele earrings translate the spiraling form of cloud into 18k gold. Each piece is a double helix drop — two twisted spirals that interlock and descend together from the ear, their intertwining suggesting the motion of cloud forming: the gathering of vapour into shape, the rotation that gives a cloud its visible mass.
As a result, the Nephele earrings carry movement in their structure. Therefore, they are earrings that seem to be in the process of forming, the way a cloud is always in the process of forming, never quite finished, never quite the same twice.
The Double Helix
The intertwining double helix is the soul of this design. Specifically, the two spirals catch the light on their separate surfaces as they twist, so the earring reads as both unified and double — one form made of two motions.
Worn as drops, the Nephele earrings turn gently as the wearer moves, the helices shifting against each other, so the interplay of their surfaces is always slightly different from one moment to the next.
Furthermore, the twisting surfaces catch light in narrow, shifting planes, the way clouds catch the light of the sun at different angles depending on their depth and direction. In this way, the Nephele earrings carry the quality of their namesake: the beautiful instability of a form that is always moving.
Nephele Earrings in 18k Gold
In rose gold the double helix glows with warmth, the two spirals reading rich and intimate against each other. In white gold the Nephele earrings turn cool and luminous, the helices catching light with the clarity of cloud-silver against a bright sky.
In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity — the most vivid expression of the spiral form, the two helices reading bold and alive. Whichever metal you choose, the double twist holds its motion.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Nephele earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The double helix demands digital modeling: the two spirals must be perfectly intertwined so the form reads as a single unified descent, the pitch of the helix must be consistent along the full length, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface of both spirals to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Nephele earrings are made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
