Tianquiztli Earrings

Oval disc earrings in 18k gold, their form inspired by the Tianquiztli — the Aztec name for the Pleiades, the gathering place of stars whose zenith marked the renewal of the world.
Made to order.
Tianquiztli Earrings take their name from Tianquiztli — the Nahuatl word for the Pleiades star cluster, meaning the marketplace or the gathering place. In Aztec astronomy, the Pleiades were among the most sacred of all celestial formations: the seven stars gathered together like people at a market, their compact cluster a distinctive and unmistakable presence in the night sky.
Furthermore, the Tianquiztli stood at the very centre of Aztec cosmological reckoning through the New Fire Ceremony — the most critical religious event in the Aztec calendar cycle. Every 52 years, when the 365-day and 260-day calendar cycles realigned in what the Aztecs called the Calendar Round, all fires across the empire were extinguished.
The people awaited in darkness, uncertain whether the world would continue. Priests climbed the Hill of the Star outside Tenochtitlan and watched the sky: if the Tianquiztli — the Pleiades — reached the zenith of the sky at midnight, the world would be renewed for another 52-year cycle.
As a result, the fate of the entire world depended each time on whether the Pleiades completed their arc at exactly the right moment. When they did, a new fire was lit on the chest of a sacrificial victim, runners carried the flame across the empire to relight every hearth, and the people knew that the world had been granted another age.
The Tianquiztli Earrings carry the form of those seven gathered stars: the oval disc as the compact, luminous gathering of the Pleiades against the dark.
The Design of the Tianquiztli Earrings
The Tianquiztli Earrings translate the gathered Pleiades into 18k gold. Each piece is an oval disc — a clean, self-contained form that carries the compact quality of the Pleiades cluster: multiple distinct presences resolved into a single unified form.
The surface of the disc carries the impression of the gathered stars — their arrangement within the oval as the actual spatial relationship of the seven Pleiades. As a result, the Tianquiztli Earrings read as both jewellery and star map: the Aztec’s most sacred constellation made wearable in the most permanent material.
The Gathering of Stars
The oval disc form is the soul of this design. Specifically, the oval creates a visual boundary around the gathered stars — the way the night sky frames the Pleiades as a distinct formation within the larger field of stars.
Worn as drops or studs, the Tianquiztli Earrings carry the cluster’s form facing outward, the gathering always present. Furthermore, the disc’s compact quality gives the earrings the sense of something concentrated — the way the Pleiades concentrate seven stars into a space that seems impossibly small for what they contain.
In this way, the Tianquiztli Earrings carry the quality of the Aztec gathering place: the sense that what is gathered together here is more than the sum of what arrived separately.
Tianquiztli Earrings in 18k Gold
In rose gold the oval disc glows with warmth, the gathered stars reading rich and vivid like the Pleiades on a clear winter night.
In white gold the Tianquiztli Earrings turn cool and celestial, the disc catching light with the blue-white clarity of star clusters in deep sky. In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity — the New Fire itself, the flame that confirmed the world would continue, carried in the most solar of all materials.
Whichever metal you choose, the gathering holds its stars.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Tianquiztli earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing.
The oval disc demands digital modeling: the surface pattern of the gathered stars must be placed with astronomical accuracy so the form reads as the actual Pleiades cluster, the disc must be proportioned so the oval carries its visual content without feeling crowded, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Tianquiztli Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
