Vasuki Earrings

Vasuki Earrings take their name from Vasuki — the king of the nagas, the great divine serpent who wears Shiva himself around his neck as an ornament and whose role in the Samudra Manthan — the churning of the cosmic ocean — placed him at the very centre of one of the most dramatic events in Hindu mythology.

In the Samudra Manthan, the gods and asuras came to an agreement: they would churn the primordial ocean together in order to produce amrita, the nectar of immortality that would give the gods eternal life.

As a result, they took Mount Mandara as the churning stick, and they needed a rope to wind around the mountain and pull alternately from each side. The rope they chose was Vasuki himself.

The asuras took his head end, the gods took his tail, and for a thousand years they churned, back and forth, until the ocean yielded its treasures. Furthermore, among the treasures that emerged from the churning were the goddess Lakshmi, the divine physician Dhanvantari, the wish-fulfilling tree Kalpavriksha, and finally amrita itself.

The Vasuki Earrings carry the form of Vasuki’s body in its natural movement: the sinuous wave of the divine serpent who was at once rope and king, the one who made immortality possible through the graceful bearing of his own body as the instrument of the cosmic act.

The Design of the Vasuki Earrings

The Vasuki Earrings translate the sinuous movement of the cosmic serpent into 18k gold. Each piece is a long drop that follows the natural wave of Vasuki’s body — a sinuous form that descends from the ear in curves rather than straight lines, its path the path of the divine naga moving through water and air.

A gemstone is set within the serpentine form: a diamond, ruby, or sapphire that reads as the concentrated point of divine power at the serpent’s heart.

As a result, the Vasuki Earrings carry both the motion of the great naga and the sacred jewel of his nature.

The sinuous wave form with its central gemstone is the soul of this design. Specifically, the curves of the drop create a form that reads as alive and directed — not a random curve but the purposeful, fluid movement of a divine being that knows exactly where it is going.

In rose gold the sinuous drops glow with warmth, set with rubies that burn along the serpent’s form like the fire of Shiva at his neck. In white gold the Vasuki Earrings turn cool and luminous, sapphires reading within the wave with the deep blue of the cosmic ocean that Vasuki churned.

The sinuous drop demands digital modeling: the curves must flow with the naturalistic rhythm of a living form rather than a mechanical one, the gemstone setting must hold the stone at exactly the right position within the wave, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other in their sinuous descent.
