ThuanThien Earrings take their name from Thuan Thien — Heaven’s Will — the legendary sword that became the instrument of Vietnam’s liberation and then disappeared back into the sacred waters from which it came. In the early fifteenth century, Vietnam was under the occupation of the Ming dynasty of China, its language suppressed, its traditions constrained.
Lê Lợi, the son of a wealthy family from Lam Sơn, refused to accept this and began building a resistance movement. According to the legend, while fishing in a lake near his home, Lê Lợi discovered a magical sword blade in the water; later, a golden turtle gave him the jeweled handle that completed it, and he understood that the sword — Thuan Thien, Heaven’s Will — had been sent to him by the Dragon King Lỳng Quań. As a result, Lê Lợi led the Lam Sơn uprising for ten years, and with Thuan Thien in his hand, he drove the Ming from Vietnam in 1428 and founded the Later Lê dynasty, one of the longest and most celebrated in Vietnamese history.
Furthermore, after his victory, while boating on the great lake at the centre of what is now Hanoi, a golden turtle rose from the water and asked for Thuan Thien to be returned to the Dragon King. Lê Lợi gave the sword back.
The lake where this happened became Hồ Hoàn Kiếm — the Lake of the Returned Sword — and it remains one of the most sacred sites in Vietnam, visited by the golden turtle’s descendants to this day.
The Design of the ThuanThien Earrings
The ThuanThien Earrings translate the legendary sword and its sacred return into 18k gold. Each piece is a drop earring whose form carries the quality of the sword — the directed, downward energy of a blade — with a gemstone set at its heart: a diamond, ruby, or sapphire that reads as the concentrated power of Heaven’s Will at the moment it was given and the moment it was returned.
As a result, the ThuanThien Earrings carry both the legend’s martial quality and its eventual return to peace.
The Sword Returned
The drop form with its central gemstone is the soul of this design. Specifically, the downward direction of the drop carries the quality of the sword descending into the water, the blade given back to the sacred lake at the moment when its work was complete.
Worn as drops, the ThuanThien Earrings descend from the ear with the composed authority of something that has been used for its true purpose and can now rest.
Furthermore, the gemstone at the heart of each drop catches the light with the intensity of the Dragon King’s own fire beneath the lake’s surface. In this way, the ThuanThien Earrings carry the essential quality of the legend: the power that serves its purpose and then returns to the world it came from.
ThuanThien Earrings in 18k Gold and Colored Gemstones
In rose gold the drop glows with warmth, set with a ruby that burns at its centre like the fire of liberation.
In white gold the ThuanThien Earrings turn cool and luminous, a sapphire reading within the drop with the still blue of Hồ Hoàn Kiếm at dawn. In yellow gold they radiate with full golden intensity, a brilliant diamond at the centre — the sword’s own light, Heaven’s Will at its most clear. Whichever stone you choose, the drop holds its purpose.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each ThuanThien earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing.
The drop with its central gemstone demands digital modeling: the form must carry the quality of directional energy without becoming merely a teardrop, the gemstone setting must hold the stone at exactly the right position within the drop, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly.
Hand-finishing polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the ThuanThien Earrings is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
