Graeae Earrings
$0.01
Long drop earrings in 18k gold, each set with three rubies, sapphires, or diamonds descending in sequence — one for each of the Grey Sisters. The Graeae earrings are named for the three ancient sisters of Greek mythology who shared one eye between them, passing it hand to hand.
Made to order in rose, white, or yellow gold.
Graeae earrings take their name from the Graeae — the three Grey Sisters of Greek mythology, among the oldest and strangest figures in the ancient world. Deino, Enyo, and Pemphredo were daughters of Phorcys and Ceto, sea deities of the deep ocean.
They were born already old. From the moment they entered the world, their hair was grey and their faces were ancient. However, what made the Graeae unlike any other beings in the Greek cosmos was this: the three sisters shared a single eye and a single tooth between them.
The eye passed from hand to hand. Whoever held it could see; the other two were blind. As a result, their sight was always partial, always borrowed, always in motion. Perseus stole their shared eye on his way to face Medusa, holding it hostage until the sisters told him what he needed to know.
Therefore, the Graeae are a myth about the limits of knowledge — what we can see depends on what we hold, and what we hold must eventually pass on.
The Design of the Graeae Earrings
The Graeae earrings translate that myth into gold. Each piece is a long drop earring with three gemstones set along its length — one for each of the three sisters. The stones descend from the ear in a vertical line, each separated from the next so that each reads as its own presence.
As a result, the earring is a sequence: three points of light sharing a single axis, the way three sisters share a single eye. The Graeae earrings are long and dramatic in their fall. The three stones catch the light at different points as the earring moves, so no single glance captures all three at once.
Three Sisters, One Vision
The triple-stone structure is the soul of this design. Specifically, each gem occupies its own position, slightly separated so that each reads as an individual presence. However, together they form one unified line — a chain of light descending from the ear.
Worn against the neck, the Graeae earrings draw the eye downward along the three stones, each one catching the light in turn. Furthermore, as the wearer moves, the stones shift slightly in relation to each other, so the sequence seems alive and variable, like the eye passing between hands. In this way, they carry the Graeae’s essential quality: vision that is distributed, shared, and always moving.
Graeae Earrings in 18k Gold and Coloured Stones
In rose gold the three stones glow with warmth, three rubies reading like three coals descending along the earring’s length. In white gold the Graeae earrings turn cool and celestial, three sapphires reading like three drops of deep water, each catching a different depth of blue.
In yellow gold they radiate with full intensity, three brilliant diamonds that pass light between them the way the sisters passed their eye — each holding the vision for a moment before the next takes it. Each version gives the same triple form a different quality of sight.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Graeae earring was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The three-stone drop demands careful modeling: each setting must be spaced consistently so the sequence reads as deliberate rather than accidental, the drop must hang true so all three stones align vertically, and the two earrings of a pair must mirror each other exactly.
Additionally, the settings must grip each stone securely while keeping the gold between them clean and uncluttered. Hand-finishing then polishes every surface to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
