Within that egg, before it broke, held in the luminous substance of Aether himself, waited the first god, Phanes, the one who would bring all new life into being. Aether was not merely present at the beginning. He was the vessel of the beginning.

In Hesiod’s older telling, Aether is the son of Erebus (darkness), and Nyx (Night). That he was born from darkness into blazing light is perhaps the most beautiful truth the mythology offers: that the brightest things arise from the deepest dark, that luminosity is not the absence of darkness but its most magnificent child.
