Nereydeen Ring

Nereydeen rings evoke the fifty Nereids of Greek mythology in a wide matte gold band adorned with raised organic accent forms whose high-polished surfaces catch the light like wave-caps. Available as single-metal or two-metal stacking pairs, made to order in São Paulo in 18-karat yellow, rose, and white gold.
Nereydeen Rings takes its name from the Nereids, the fifty sea nymphs of Greek mythology, daughters of the ancient sea god Nereus and the Oceanid Doris. Unlike the storm-driven Titans or the rivalrous Olympians, the Nereids were beings of specificity and nuance: each one embodied a precise quality of the sea. Thetis carried its silver shimmer; Galatea, its milk-white foam; Amphitrite, its sovereign depths; Psamathe, its sandy shallows; Cymothoe, its surge and roll. Together they formed a living taxonomy of the ocean’s character, not as a single undifferentiated force, but as a community of distinct presences, each real, each named, each irreplaceable.
The Friszman MD Nereydeen ring embodies this plurality of motion in its very structure. A wide, architectural band forms the body of the ring, substantial and serene, with a matte surface that suggests depth and permanence. Against this quiet ground, a series of raised accent shapes are distributed around the full circumference: organic, fluid forms whose high-polished surfaces catch and release light in sudden, shifting flashes. Their outlines resist easy classification — they occupy the space between wave-cap and petal, between sea-creature scale and shield boss, suggesting forms that emerged from water and retained its memory even after being cast in gold.
This dialogue between matte ground and polished figure is one of the most enduring principles in the ancient goldsmith’s art. Minoan metalwork (ca. 2000–1450 BCE), among the earliest luxury metalwork of the Aegean world, achieved its characteristic power through exactly this contrast: repoussé forms raised against a textured field, high-polish accents catching light from the matte surface behind them. The famous gold bee pendant from Chrysolakkos, the bull-leaping rhytons of Knossos, the octopus-decorated vessels of the sea-trading palace culture, all use this same formal grammar of ground and relief, stasis and motion, that the Nereydeen ring employs.
The fluid accent forms on the Nereydeen surface also recall the bas-relief sculptures of the great temple traditions of Asia. At Angkor Wat, the Apsaras, celestial water nymphs of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, are carved in high relief against the stone walls in exactly this relationship: their polished, ornamented forms emerging from the matte architectural ground as presences that belong to another order of reality. In Mesopotamian tradition, the Apkallu sages, divine beings who rose from the waters to bring civilization to humanity, appear in the same formal register: raised, polished, distinct against the flat surface they inhabit. Water beings across the ancient world share this visual grammar.
The Nereydeen ring is offered in three single-metal versions, 18-karat yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold, and in three two-metal pairings: yellow with rose gold, yellow with white gold, and white with rose gold. The paired combinations are styled to complement each other as stacking rings, their shared design creating a visual conversation between two registers of color on adjacent fingers or worn together. Each metal shifts the mood of the accent forms: warm and coral-touched in rose gold, cool and lunar in white, ancient and radiant in yellow.
Made to order in São Paulo, Brazil, using precision 3D modeling and hand-finishing, each Nereydeen ring is sized using Friszman MD’s inner diameter measurement system to ensure an exact fit. Like the Nereids themselves, numerous, distinct, and collectively complete, the ring rewards a different kind of attention at every angle of light. What appears to be a simple band reveals itself, in motion, as a living surface.
