Description

Oriethusa Earrings are water in motion, a long, slow fall from the ear to the air, a polished gold body that narrows at the top where the stud post holds it and widens gradually, with the unhurried inevitability of falling water, into a broad circular disc at the base. The disc is matte, finely textured, and carries the memory of the motion that produced it, the pool that forms at the bottom of a spring, the still surface where the current surrenders its direction and becomes depth. This is Arethusa: the nymph who was a river before she was a spring, who ran to escape a god and was transformed at the moment of her greatest vulnerability into the very element she had always been, and who flows today in the island of Ortygia as a freshwater spring that rises through saltwater, tasting of neither ocean nor land but of the space between them.

Arethusa was a nymph of Achaea who had consecrated herself to Artemis and lived as a huntress, running through the forests of the Peloponnese with the goddess’s retinue. One day, hot from the hunt, she waded into the river Alpheus to cool herself. She felt the current stir around her legs with an intention that was not natural to water, a warmth, a direction, a desire. The river god Alpheus had fallen in love with her and was pursuing her through his own element. She ran, and he followed, taking human form to chase her across the land, until she cried to Artemis for help. The goddess wrapped her in a cloud and transformed her into a spring, sending her underground through the earth to emerge on the island of Ortygia, off the coast of Syracuse in Sicily. Even then, Alpheus pursued her: his freshwater flows through the salt of the Mediterranean to mingle with hers in Ortygia, two springs meeting in defiance of geography and the physics of water. The ancient Greeks knew that the river Alpheus of Greece and the spring of Arethusa in Sicily were connected underground, because when a cup was thrown into the Alpheus it would eventually surface in Arethusa’s spring.

The Oriethusa Earrings carry this mythology in every dimension. The narrow top, where the stud grips the lobe, is the moment of the chase, the compressed urgency of Arethusa running. The long polished body is the underground passage: the flight through the earth, the dark tunnel of transformation, the journey from one shore to another through the body of the world. The broadening at the base is the emergence, the moment when the compressed, directed force of underground water suddenly finds the open air and spreads, slows, and becomes a surface. The circular matte disc at the base is Ortygia’s spring: the pool of arrival, the place where the journey ends and the new existence begins.

The form of the Oriethusa Earrings also resonates with the ancient Egyptian cosmetic spoon, a category of luxury object that appears throughout the New Kingdom, its bowl representing the lotus flower, a swimming woman, or a pool of sacred water, its handle the stem or the figure of the diver. These spoons were not functional but ritual: they held the ungents and pigments used in temple ceremony, their form enacting the mythology of the Nile as a source of divine abundance. The Oriethusa Earrings have the same relationship between handle and bowl, between the directed motion of the upper form and the open receptacle of the base, the same implicit narrative of a flowing thing that gathers itself into stillness at the end of its journey.

The small raised points visible on the matte disc at the base of each earring are the bubbles of the emerging spring, the carbonation of underground water meeting the surface, the first breath of the element that has traveled so far to arrive at this point. They are Arethusa announcing herself, the spring declaring its presence at the edge of the sea.

Available in 18k rose gold, 18k white gold, and 18k yellow gold, with no gemstones. In white gold, the polished body of the Oriethusa Earrings has the quality of water in full light, the most literal translation of the nymph’s element. In rose gold, the warm tone gives the flowing form an earthly, embodied quality, connecting the piece to the physical experience of transformation. In yellow gold, the piece resonates with the solar associations of the Sicilian landscape where Arethusa finally found rest. Inner diameter sizing is not required for earrings. 3D designed, hand-finished in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
