Nephele Earrings

Nephele earrings are a double helix of intertwining gold ribbons, two strands spiraling around each other in a continuous high-polished cascade, creating eye-shaped voids of light and shadow at every interval. Inspired by the Greek cloud nymph, made to order in São Paulo in 18-karat yellow, rose, or white gold.
Nephele earrings take their name from one of the most ethereal figures in Greek mythology. Nephele (Νεφέλη — “cloud”) was a being fashioned by Zeus from mist, shaped into human form as a simulacrum of Hera. She was not born but made: the first being in the Greek mythological record whose body was fundamentally atmospheric, not flesh and bone, but vapor given temporary coherence and intention. From her union with the mortal Ixion came the Centaurs, half-human and half-horse, creatures of the threshold between civilization and wilderness who inherited their cloud-mother’s quality of existing between states.
But Nephele’s most enduring act was one of rescue. When her children Phrixus and Helle were threatened by their stepmother, it was Nephele who sent the golden ram to carry them away, the same ram whose miraculous golden fleece would later draw Jason and the Argonauts across the known world. At the root of the greatest adventure story in Greek mythology stands this cloud-mother: a being made of nothing permanent, who nonetheless made something permanent happen.
The Friszman MD Nephele earrings translate this quality of cloud into its most precise material form: the double helix. Two ribbons of gold wind around each other in a continuous downward spiral, one curving over the other as if caught in a slow, gentle updraft, creating a series of eye-shaped negative spaces as they descend, windows of air within a structure of light. The surface is entirely high-polished, so that every angle of the helix returns a different quality of brightness: the form does not merely reflect light but distributes it, sending it in different directions simultaneously, as a cloud does when the sun moves through it.
The double helix is among the most ancient and cross-cultural of sacred forms. In Celtic goldsmiths, particularly the great torques and twisted arm-rings of the La Tène period (ca. 5th–1st century BCE) — the twisted gold ribbon was the primary vocabulary of luxury metalwork, its rotational structure understood as a carrier of protective and cosmological power. The caduceus of Hermes, with its two intertwining serpents, uses the same geometry to encode balance and the mediation between worlds. In Hindu cosmology, the Ida and Pingala energy currents, solar and lunar forces, spiral upward around the central Sushumna channel in exactly this double-helix motion, their interplay generating the conditions for consciousness itself.
In the Americas, the twisted and helical forms of Muisca goldwork from Colombia and the Chimú ear spools of coastal Peru employed rotational geometry to encode celestial cycles: the apparent path of the sun through the sky, the spiraling of the Milky Way across the southern night. Even in molecular biology’s most iconic discovery, the double helix structure of DNA, revealed in 1953 — the same form reappears as the architecture of biological inheritance, the structural language in which all living information is stored. Nephele’s form is, in this sense, older than she is, it belongs to the deep grammar of existence.
Available in 18-karat yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold, without gemstones — the design needs none, because the form itself is complete. Made to order in São Paulo, Brazil, using precision 3D modeling and meticulous hand-finishing, each Nephele earring is a study in the elegance of pure structure: two forces, one movement, endless light.
