Haumea Earrings

$0.01

Haumea earrings are named for the great Hawaiian mother goddess of fertility and childbirth, one of the most ancient and revered deities in the Hawaiian islands, mother of Pele, of Hi’iaka, of an entire lineage of gods and people. Eternally renewing rather than merely ageless, Haumea moved through the ages in an unbroken cycle of transformation and return. Two elongated oval loops of 18k gold twist into a perfect figure-eight, the symbol of infinity, of endless renewal, of life returning to itself.

Haumea earrings is available in yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold.

Description

Haumea earrings carry the oldest story of all, not of a single birth, but of the principle of birth itself, the divine force through which all life enters the world and returns to it again.

In Hawaiian mythology, Haumea is the goddess of fertility and childbirth, one of the most ancient and fundamental deities in the Hawaiian pantheon. Her name carries her essence within it, derived from words meaning sacred birth and of the sacred earth, and her worship is among the oldest practiced on the Hawaiian islands. She is the mother of Pele, the volcano goddess; of Hi’iaka, the goddess of lightning and hula; of Nāmaka, the sea goddess; and of countless others, an entire generation of divine forces that shaped the Hawaiian world, all flowing from a single inexhaustible source.

What makes Haumea unlike any other goddess in the world’s mythological traditions is the nature of her immortality. She was not simply ageless. She was eternally renewing, cycling through youth and age and youth again, using her sacred Mākālei staff to transform herself at will, moving through human generations as a participant rather than an observer. She would grow old, then return to youth, then walk back among her own descendants, taking a new husband from each new generation to ensure the continuation of human life. The cycle never stopped. The creation never ended. Each generation was both a new beginning and a continuation of everything that came before.

She is also credited with one of the most profound gifts in Hawaiian legend, the gift of natural childbirth itself. In the time before Haumea intervened, human women could not give birth in the way that nature intended. She came among them and taught them the way of bringing life into the world, transforming what had been a dangerous, violent act into one aligned with the sacred rhythms of the earth. Through her, birth became a continuation of the natural order rather than a rupture of it.

It is this quality of endless, unbroken cyclicality, of life giving birth to life, of renewal following renewal, of the old becoming young and the young becoming wise and the cycle beginning again without end, that the Haumea earrings embody in their extraordinary form. Two elongated oval loops of 18k gold cross and twist into a perfect figure-eight, the mathematical symbol of infinity, the oldest visual representation of the endless cycle. The upper loop and the lower loop are mirror images, connected at their crossing point by a small sphere of gold that holds the whole form in its elegant tension. Follow the line of the form with your eye and you cannot find where it begins or ends, because it does not begin or end. It simply continues, as Haumea herself continued, as life itself continues.

Haumea earrings moves as you move, responsive, fluid, alive, two loops of gold in perpetual relationship with each other, as the generations of the Hawaiian people were in perpetual relationship with the goddess who renewed herself to remain among them.

In 2008, the International Astronomical Union honored this mythology by naming one of the solar system’s dwarf planets Haumea, a celestial body that spins faster than any other known object of its size, completing a full rotation every four hours, as if the ancient goddess’s eternal restlessness had found its perfect physical expression in the sky.

Haumea earrings is available in yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold — three expressions of the same eternal flame, endlessly renewing, endlessly returning.
