Penlee Pendant
$0.01
A cylinder pendant in 18k gold, its surface carrying the Celtic boss pattern of ancient Cornish metalwork and the cylindrical form of the Mesopotamian seal. The Penlee Pendant brings two ancient goldsmithing traditions into one wearable piece.
Made to order.
Penlee Pendant takes its name from the Cornish tradition and draws its form from two of the oldest goldsmithing practices in the ancient world. Penlee is a headland in Cornwall — the far southwestern tip of Britain, a Celtic land with one of the oldest metalworking traditions in the Atlantic world.
Cornish and broader Celtic metalwork is defined by the boss pattern: the raised circular disc or hemisphere applied to shields, torques, and ceremonial metalwork throughout the La Tène period (ca. 500 BCE – 100 CE).
The boss is not merely decorative: it carries structural and sacred significance, the raised circle as a concentrated point of force and divine presence on the object. Furthermore, the cylinder form of the pendant connects to a second ancient tradition: the Mesopotamian cylinder seal.
Used from approximately 3500 BCE in Sumeria, the cylinder seal was a small stone or metal cylinder carved with intricate mythological and administrative scenes, rolled across clay to leave its impression as a personal signature.
It is the world’s first personal identification device, and also one of the most concentrated art forms in ancient history — entire mythological narratives compressed into a surface the size of a small ring.
The Penlee Pendant brings these two traditions together: the Celtic boss on the surface of a cylindrical Mesopotamian form, the boss pattern of the Atlantic world wrapped around the seal of the Mesopotamian world.
The Design of the Penlee Pendant
The Penlee Pendant translates those two ancient traditions into a single 18k gold cylinder. The form is the cylinder of the Mesopotamian seal: clean, precise, dimensional, designed to be held and turned in the hand.
Its surface carries the Celtic boss pattern: raised circles distributed across the cylinder, each one a concentrated point of presence within the gold.
As a result, the Penlee Pendant reads as both archaeological record and contemporary jewellery: a form that knows its own history and wears it with composure.
Boss and Seal
The combination of the boss pattern and the cylinder form is the soul of this design. Specifically, the raised bosses on the cylindrical surface create a surface of light and shadow that changes as the pendant turns — each boss catching the light from above while its surrounding surface holds shade, the way relief sculpture reads most clearly in raking light.
Worn close to the body, the Penlee Pendant turns gently as the wearer moves, its cylindrical form reading differently from every angle. Furthermore, the boss pattern creates a rhythm around the cylinder that reads as both geometric and alive: a pattern of circles on a surface of curves.
In this way, the pendant carries the essential quality of both its sources: the precision of the Mesopotamian seal and the sacred geometry of the Celtic boss.
Penlee Pendant in 18k Gold
In rose gold the bossed cylinder glows with warmth, the raised circles reading rich and vivid against the warm surface, like ancient Celtic metalwork seen in firelight. In white gold the Penlee Pendant turns cool and precise, the boss pattern reading with the clarity of archaeological bronze in museum light.
In yellow gold it radiates with full golden intensity — the most direct echo of the Cornish and Celtic goldsmiths who worked in yellow gold and understood the boss as the most concentrated form of their tradition.
Whichever metal you choose, the pattern holds its depth.
Craftsmanship and 3D Precision
Each Penlee Pendant was developed in 3D modeling software and brought to life through precision 3D printing and meticulous hand-finishing. The bossed cylinder demands digital modeling: every boss must be placed at a consistent height and spacing so the pattern reads as deliberate across the full surface of the cylinder, the cylinder itself must be proportioned correctly to hang as intended, and the pendant must carry its visual complexity without feeling heavy.
Hand-finishing polishes the raised boss surfaces to a high shine. This is the precision that only the Friszman MD process can deliver reliably.
A Made-to-Order Piece
Like every Friszman MD creation, the Penlee Pendant is made to order and hand-finished in 18k gold.
