Prahimee Earrings

Prahimee Earrings carry on their surface the oldest creation story in the world, a story that predates writing, predates cities, predates the earliest civilizations that archaeology has uncovered, and survives in the Rigveda as one of the founding documents of human spiritual thought. Before creation, the Rigveda tells us, there was neither being nor non-being, neither death nor immortality, neither night nor day. There was only the One, breathing without breath in the darkness. And then, from within that darkness, the first thing separated itself from itself, and the universe began. The Prahimee Earrings are about that first separation: the oval forms recessed into the face of each earring are the Hiranyagarbha, the Cosmic Golden Egg, the container of the universe at the moment before creation becomes plural.

Hiranyagarbha, literally the golden womb or golden egg, appears in the Rigveda as the first thing to arise in the primordial darkness: a single golden egg floating on the cosmic waters, containing within itself the entirety of what the universe would become. From this egg, Brahma the creator god emerged and separated the shell into the heavens above and the earth below, the first act of differentiation that made the world of form possible. The egg is thus not merely the origin of one thing but the origin of the principle of distinction itself, the moment when the undivided becomes divided, when the infinite becomes countable, when silence first acquires the potential to become sound.

The Prahimee Earrings present this mythology in a sequence of graduated oval and circular recesses distributed across the face of a long, smoothly pointed blade of 18k gold. The ovals vary in size, some large and generous, some smaller and more intimate, arranged in a rhythm that suggests both biological and cosmological ordering: the large forms are the primary creation events, the universe at its moments of greatest expansion; the smaller forms are the subsidiary creations, the nested worlds within worlds that Vedic cosmology describes with an intricacy that modern physics is only beginning to approximate. Each recessed form is matte-textured within its polished border, creating the same dual-surface contrast that appears throughout Friszman MD’s work, the interior of each cosmic egg is different from its shell, as the content of the universe is different from the space that contains it.

The Prahimee name also resonates with Brahmi, the ancient script of the Indian subcontinent, the writing system from which most of the scripts of South and Southeast Asia ultimately descend, inscribed on the Ashoka pillars in the third century BCE and carrying the edicts of an emperor who had embraced ahimsa, non-violence, as the organizing principle of his empire. In Brahmi script, the characters are rounded and fluid, their forms derived from much older symbol systems whose origins remain debated. The recessed ovals on the Prahimee Earrings carry something of this character: each one is a sign, a mark, a unit of meaning whose full content cannot be extracted from a single viewing but accumulates through attention and repetition.

The elongated blade form of the earring, pointed at the base, rounded at the top where the stud post sits, is the form of the lingam in its most abstracted register: the cosmic pillar, the axis of creation, the vertical presence that connects the beneath-world to the above-world and carries meaning in both directions simultaneously. In this reading, the oval recesses are not merely decorations on a surface but windows cut through the pillar of creation, each one offering a glimpse of the interior space from which the universe emerges.

Available in 18k rose gold, 18k white gold, and 18k yellow gold, with no gemstones, the recessed ovals are themselves the jewels, defined by the contrast between matte interior and polished frame, between the contained and the container, between the egg and the space around it.
