Seshatsy Earrings take their name from Seshat — the Egyptian goddess of writing, mathematics, time-keeping, and architecture: the divine scribe who recorded everything and measured everything and kept the account of all things in the universe.
Seshat is depicted in Egyptian art with a distinctive headdress — a seven-pointed star or flower above her head, sometimes shown with a downward-pointing palm frond — and she holds a notched palm rib, the ancient Egyptian writing instrument for recording the passage of years.
As a result, Seshat is not merely a goddess of writing in the literary sense but a goddess of all measurement: she counted the years of a pharaoh’s reign, she measured the foundation lines of temples with a rope and stakes, she recorded the spoils of battle, she kept the inventory of the library.
Furthermore, Seshat’s branching palm frond is one of the most meaningful images in Egyptian religious art: the palm branch was the hieroglyph for ‘year’, and each notch on the branch recorded a passage of time.
Seshat holding the notched branch was Seshat keeping the count, Seshat being the record itself. The Seshatsy Earrings carry that branching form: the forking structure of the palm frond as the geometry of a mind that divides and counts and remembers.
