Phythae Earrings take their name from the Pythagorean tradition — the mathematical and philosophical school founded by Pythagoras of Samos in the sixth century BCE, whose central conviction was that the universe is fundamentally mathematical: that numbers are not merely tools for counting but are the essence of reality itself.

Pythagoras and his brotherhood studied the harmony of the spheres — the musical intervals produced by the movements of the planets — and the sacred properties of specific numbers and geometric forms.

As a result, certain geometric shapes carried divine significance: the triangle as the simplest polygon, the golden ratio as the proportion that nature returns to repeatedly, the five Platonic solids as the building blocks of all matter.

Furthermore, Plato extended the Pythagorean insight in his Timaeus, where he associated each of the five regulars polyhedral with one of the classical elements: the tetrahedron with fire, the cube with earth, the octahedron with air, the icosahedron with water, and the dodecahedron with the cosmos itself.
